Poster + your frame
A flexible route when you want to choose the frame and mat yourself. Check paper dimensions, frame compatibility and whether you want a visible border. Allow for the complete outside frame.
Understand print dimensions, frame allowance, mats and canvas depth. Compare the measurements that matter before choosing a finish for your wall art.
The print size describes the artwork or paper dimensions specified by the seller. The frame opening is the area intended to hold or reveal the print. The outside frame size is the measurement that determines how much wall space the finished piece needs.
Check which measurement the listing uses. A frame labelled for a 16 × 20 in print will normally occupy more wall area than the print itself; ask for the exact outside dimensions before ordering if space is tight.
For a simple estimate, add the combined mat and frame allowance to both sides. A 16 × 20 in print with a total 2 in allowance on every side has an estimated outside size of 20 × 24 in (50.8 × 61 cm). The actual construction and overlap can change this, so use the finished frame measurements when available.
Outside width = print width + left allowance + right allowance
When using our calculator, enter the total allowance for one side. If you have a 1 in mat plus an estimated 1 in frame beyond the print, enter 2 in. Use 0 to compare the front of an unframed canvas.

Consider both the front dimensions and the depth from the wall. Confirm whether the selected option includes a frame and which outer measurements apply. A front-view calculator cannot show the exact edge or material texture.
A digital download gives you a file; printing and framing are separate decisions. Check the file ratios and the print provider’s size requirements. Current options and included items are specified on the individual Etsy listing.
